So, the current election is very interesting to many people in Japan. Many of my colleagues watch it very closely and have asked me who I prefer (Clinton or Obama) as well as my projections on the election.
Overwhelmingly, the Japanese seem to prefer Obama. I am sure that some have researched the candidates and come to a conclusion that way, but most just like him because there are two cities in Japan called "Obama". They seem excited that he is the presumptive nominee.
On the Republican side, they joke that McCain will probably win because of his name. In Japanese, the verb "makeru" means "to lose". When it is conjugated to "makenai" (which sort of sounds like McCain) it means "cannot lose" or "will not lose".
*Let's hope they're wrong!

Molly! I got your package today, thank you so much for the diversions!! I'm thinking we'll do the puzzle and hang it in the baby's room. And, of course, we'll eat the chocolate---baby can't have chocolate (except through me) for quite a long time. Anyway, it was very thoughtful of you to send those things.
I just talked to someone who was in Peru who said the same thing---the dem primaries were all folks were talking about. But, the focus there was on the danger of assassination for Obama. Mainstream media doesn't talk much about that here, but if you listen to BlackAmerica Web or other such media outlets, they are talking about it.
Hope you have a great summer in Japan and that your trip to MN is wonderful. We'll miss you this time around, but I'm sure we'll be sending lots of photos.
Love, Carrie
You are welcome! Make sure to rent the movie as well. Those chocolate cookies are my absolute favorite Japanese sweet.
Very interesting about the buzz in Peru. It is amazing how much culture can influence it! The reports from Kenya and Indonesia are also fascinating.
Sad to miss you but I will expect to see loads of pictures! I am sure that your mom will have tons of stories to tell.
